Quantum of Solace Review

Oh it’s so good to see you 007, it’s been a while since we’ve played one of your 007 games, and yet you have a new one, alright lets dive into your world and see whats been changed.

At long last, a new 007 game has been made, and a really cool looking one might I add, utilizing the Call of Duty 4 Engine to improve your bond experience, when it necessarily doesn’t but makes the game look good, want to know why here’s why…..

Quantum of Solace is a FPS and in a way a 3PS (3 person shooter) made by Treyarch who has decided to bring back the 007 series but to next gen consoles, you of course, play as James Bond a 00 Agent who works for MI:6 and you play a series of Missions from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace both of the new 007 movies but sadly their short and sometimes awful to play. I honestly don’t know what Treyarch was thinking but they should have put more time and effort into the game other than releasing it before the movie.  Let’s start with the story, you start out with the ending of Casino Royale and play in the heat of the moment of getting the bad guy, after that you move onto Quantum of Solace (YES, Finally a sneak peek at the movie). You only play the new movie for say three levels then right back to Casino Royale, (WTF) seriously I said that but then said ok lets move on, mainly you play the action parts that didn’t make it into the two new movies. Sadly when you play each level you get objectives but their sometimes the same thing to do all over, clear out a room, move on ,repeat but their are some parts were you need to use stealth and this is where the game shines out on, that the stealth works well but not all the time. Another thing that I had issues with is that the character animations could have been better and their are issues when you defeat an enemy he falls down as if you were taking quick snapshots, like frame by frame you see him fall down and that really was an issue for me. The AI is not the brightest either, all teh time they’ll stick out like a sore thumb pretty much saying “Hey heres a freeshot, just get it over with”.  Also there is no hand to hand combat in the game and that really was needed since in past games Hand to hand was used occasionally and the Story is really and I do mean really short about 5-6 hours of gameplay and you’ll finish it in one day. On the bright side there are some cool takedown moves and the gameplay is overall decent but it could have used more work.

Now the graphics are well done using the Call of Duty 4 Engine, but I still say it could have been used better, color in the game is usually dull and there are some issues when you change backgrounds that the screen changes color. But bond does look great on a next-gen system, characters do as well but overall the graphics are not eye-poping, it still needs work.  Possibly the only part where the game shines out on is the audio, actually having Daniel Craig voice and his likeness being used, from that you won’t tell if that’s him or not, but guns sound good although it’s not top not, it’s still decent, music is well bond music although I felt that some of it was at the wrong place at the wrong time, I cleared out a room and the music continued to play until I finally reached my checkpoint, I probably looked around to see if I missed a bad guy but I found out like 10 minutes later that I had cleared the room. The online aspect of the game is for the most part decent as well 12 players can play in certain games, and their are about 9 game modes, in which some are unique to the Bond world and those are:

Bond Versus: Pretty much you as bond against 6 other people, and your objective is to diffuse three bombs or to eliminate the other team.

Golden Gun: Free-For-All, in the map there is one gun that will completely obliterate the other people you are fighint against.

Bond Evasion: One player is Bond with MI:6 backing him up, while the Organization has to eliminate him before he reaches the safe zone.

Thoughout this review experience, I am a huge 007 fan I have loved watching the movies and playing the games even spin offs, but this sadly doesn’t come close to my expectations, it’s a nice first try on the next-gen systems but it’s no Golden-Eye. (In my opinion, this was probably done quickly so Treyarch can focus on CoD:WaW)

Scores:

Presentation: 7.5

A nice attempt at a next-gen bond but, it’s not that great.

Graphics: 7.5

Not the best utilized from the COD4 Engine, could have been better than decent and there are some annoying bugs.

Sound: 8.0

The sound is what mainly makes the game bright, the voice acting is well done, and the guns are ok.

Gameplay: 7.5

The gameplay is fun but dull at the same time, do this that, then that and repeat, although more could have been done instead of button mashing in certain parts.

Replay Value: 7.0

The story is short and bounces around from the two movies, online is decent but nothing special, (PS3 gamers may rent it for trophies)

Final Score: 7.5/10

Star Wars Battlefront III Surfaces

Apparently, some old renders from Star Wars Battlefront III were recently dug up:

As a sad footnote to a year strewn with the corpses of shuttered studios, Free Radical let go most of its 180-plus employees on December 17. Best-known for the TimeSplitters series, the Nottingham, England-based shop had bet heavily on the success of its [...]
